The Marathon.

26.2 miles of agony, pain, cramping, bloating, water retention…sorry, a Midol commercial was on TV. Got to stop watching Lifetime!

Anyhoo, some Greek soldier named Pheidippides, probably wearing a skirt, ran from the town of Marathon to Athens to announce that the Persians had been defeated, then promptly slipped on the sponsors’ banner at the finish line, banged his head and died. Then, some French dude named Pierre decided that’s a good enough reason to have such a distance race in the Olympics. Now, every town in America thinks they need to have one, including such po-dunk towns as Boston, New York, Chicago, DC, and Richmond. Which, brings us to back to Do, Re, Me, Fa, So La, Ti, Do. (Braden, turn down your music!) Oh yes, Saturday!

Yes, it’s Marathon day here in Capital City. Thousands of people will be running around our lovely streets, even though no one is chasing them, with people cheering and throwing drinks at them. Somehow I picture hundreds of dogs chomping at the bit trying to get out of their yards to chase this mass of humanity. Might make for a more interesting race, huh?

Well, I know that should I ever be persuaded (at gunpoint, most likely) to run such a race, I’d be extremely thirsty, and would also need to stretch my aching muscles by dancing to, say a local rock band. Fortunately, Wonderground has decided to perform such community service (no, we were NOT mandated by the courts).

So, after the race (and, I suspect, a nap) come on down to Easy Street. Wonderground starts at 9:30 and plays till they kick us out. It’s our last gig of the year as Jamey has to smuggle boat parts to his in-laws somewhere in the Caribbean. No excuses this time! We will hunt you down and play polka music outside your house/apartment/shack/homeless shelter should you find something “better” to do.
